Backup – Data Compression

This feature allows files to be compressed into a ZIP file in the 'Backup' copy mode.

Table of Contents

  • Features
  • ZIP File Name
  • Options
  • Data Compression
  • Compression Method
  • File Splitting
  • Data Encryption
  • Temporary Creation of ZIP Files

Features

  • ZIP file size up to 18 million terabytes
  • Up to 4 billion files per ZIP file
  • Support for AES 256-bit encryption
  • Option to split into multiple archives
  • Storage of file permissions
  • Support for Unicode characters in file names
  • Storage of files with UNC paths

Limitations

  • Empty folders cannot be backed up into ZIP files
  • Files with a path length over 260 characters cannot be compressed
Tip
Use the profile property 'Connect drives' to shorten long paths with a drive letter and reduce path length.

ZIP File Name

Specify the name of the ZIP file here. The following placeholders are available:
PlaceholderDescription
%P%Profile name
%S%Last folder name of the source path
%KW%Calendar week according to DIN 1355
Format characterDate and time
Environment variablesWindows system variables
Note: Text that should not be interpreted as a placeholder must be enclosed in quotation marks.

Examples:

Name FormatZIP File Name
"%P%" (dd_mm_yy hh_nn_ss)Profile name (17_08_25 16_10_08)
{yy-mm-dd hh-nn-ss} "%P%"{25-08-17 16-10-08} Profile name
"Backup on" yyyy-mm-dd hh_nn_ssBackup on 2025-08-17 16_10_08
"Backup" ddddBackup Monday
"Backup %KW%.Week" dd.mm.yyyyBackup 33.Week 17.08.2025

Options

  • Delete existing ZIP file
Deletes a ZIP file with the same name before backup.
  • Store file permissions
Saves NTFS permissions in the ZIP file.
  • Back up files from all source folders into a ZIP file
Compresses files from multiple source folders into a single ZIP file.
  • Store file paths
Defines how paths are stored inside the ZIP file:
    • Store full path (Example: Data\Word\Info.doc)
    • Store path without source path (Example: Word\Info.doc)
    • Store only file name (Example: Info.doc)
In the examples, the source folder C:\Data was used and the file C:\Data\Word\Info.doc was backed up.
Note: When using the Store only file name option, path specifications in filter rules have no effect.

Data Compression

  • Compression Level
Specify how strongly the files should be compressed. This affects processing time and the final size of the ZIP file. The following levels are available:
    • None
    • Fast
    • Normal (Default)
    • Maximum
The higher the compression level, the longer it takes to create the ZIP file — but the file will be smaller. With the None setting, data is stored in the ZIP file without compression.
  • Compression Method
This option allows you to specify the compression method for the ZIP file. This affects processing time and the final size of the ZIP file. Available file compression methods:
    • Deflate
    • Deflate64
    • BWT
    • LZMA
The compression methods Deflate64, BWT, and LZMA are available starting with the AllSync Professional Edition.

File Splitting

  • Split ZIP file into multiple archives
This option allows the ZIP file to be split into multiple parts with a defined file size. Additionally, the compatibility of the split ZIP files can be specified:
    • Standard Compatibility
The split files can be extracted using common software such as 7-Zip, WinRAR, or WinZip. The ZIP files are saved with the following file extensions:
      • backup.zip
      • backup.z01
      • backup.z02
      • ...
    • AllSync ZIP File Manager
The split files can only be extracted using the ZIP File Manager from AllSync. The ZIP files are saved with the following file extensions:
      • backup.zip
      • backup.z02
      • backup.z03
      • ...

Data Encryption

  • Encrypt ZIP file
Protect your ZIP files with a password. Available methods:
    • ZIP 2.0
    • AES 256-bit
The AES encryption method is recommended as it offers significantly higher security than the classic ZIP 2.0 method. The AES 256-bit method is available starting with the AllSync Business Edition.

Temporary Creation of ZIP Files

  • Temporarily create ZIP file in the following folder
With this option, the ZIP file is first created in the specified folder and then moved to the destination folder. You can also set this option in AllSync’s general options for all profiles, see 'Temporary Creation of ZIP Files'.
    Notes
    • The temporary folder should be located on a local drive with sufficient storage space.
    • This option must be enabled to allow updates to files within a ZIP file.
    • If the option is not used, the ZIP file is created directly in the destination folder. This can significantly slow down the creation process, especially on network drives.
