Find similar music

With this search method, you can find similar or identical music files available in the audio formats MP3, FLAC, WMA, WAV, OGG, APE, AAC, MKA, M4A, M4R and MP2. Here, the audio track of each music file is analyzed and a checksum is created from it, which is then used for comparison with other music files.

The following files are automatically excluded from the search:
  1. Files without the extensions: MP3, FLAC, WMA, WAV, OGG, APE, AAC, AIF, AIFF, MKA, M4A, M4R und MP2
  2. File with a size of 0 bytes
  3. Corrupt, invalid, or incomplete music files
  4. Music files for which read access is blocked
For points 3 and 4, an error message is output in the log.


Measurement duration

This defines how many seconds at the beginning of a music file are used to calculate the checksum. A value between 15 and 999 seconds can be set for the measurement duration. The default value for the measurement duration is 30 seconds.


Match

Here you can set the percentage value from which two music files are considered identical. The determined percentage value between two music files is displayed in the search result in the Match column. The percentage value always refers to the comparison with the reference file of a group, which is displayed in a different text color.


Comparison method

This option defines the method used to create the checksum. The default value for this option is 4.
  • 1 (No information available)
  • 2 (No information available)
  • 4 (Ignores existing silence at the beginning of an audio file)
  • 5 (No information available)


Compare only files with the same file extension

With this option, only music files with the same file extension are compared.


Detection rate

We have conducted various comparison tests to determine the detection rate for similar or identical music files using different settings. For this purpose, a WAV file (1411 kBits/s 16bit 44100kHz Stereo) was converted into various other audio formats.All audio files were converted with stereo sound, unless mono was explicitly specified.The percentage values in the table show you which settings are best suited to detect a duplicate for a specific audio format.In the column with the most highest percentage values, the text in the column header was enclosed in parentheses.

Test 'Comparison Methods'

In this test, all files were compared 4 times with a base file, using a different comparison method (1, 2, 4, and 5) each time. The measurement duration for this test was set to the default value of 30 seconds.
